Description: De bewoonbaarheid en de leefbaarheid van ons land wordt in grote mate bepaald door de bescherming van duinen en dijken en, niet in de laatste plaats, door waterbeheersing. Waterafvoer is daarbij van levensbelang. Naast het op natuurlijke wijze afvoeren van overtollig water zijn sinds de vroege Middeleeuwen bemaling en gemalen onmisbaar. Eerst simpele instrumenten door mens, dier of wind in beweging gebracht; vanaf omstreeks 1750 steeds geavanceerder gemechaniseerde en geautomatiseerde installaties, groot en klein, waarvan er thans circa 4500 in ons land hun werk doen. Historische waterkunstwerken van de waterschappen Hunze en Aa's en Noorderzijlvest zijn hier in beeld gebracht.
